Who’s Winning Wimbledon 2023?

Today I’ll be making my best guesses as to Wimbledon 2023’s winners. Wimbledon is always tricky to predict on the WTA side of things because the grass season is so short, and there are basically no dominant grass players on the women’s tour. I’ll try my best anyway.

ATP

Novak Djokovic: Yeah. He’s defended his title since 2018. Nobody on the tour right now has as much grass court experience. It would be an absolute shock for anyone else to win the tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz: He just won his first grass title, and he’s the top seed. I don’t think he would beat Djokovic in a final, and I don’t even think he will make the finals. But if someone were to beat Djokovic, it would be Alcaraz.

Jannik Sinner: I actually think he’s a huge multi-surface talent—he beat Alcaraz and pushed Djokovic to five sets last Wimbledon—but in order to really win tournaments, he has to make more first serves. Big ground strokes with minimal weaknesses in your game will get you far on any surface, though.

WTA

Aryna Sabalenka: Let me establish something really quickly: Aryna Sabalenka is my absolute #1 pick to win Wimbledon on the WTA tour. She’s won her first slam this season, she seems to have her double faults under control, and I think she’s playing smarter tennis this year. She has arguably the highest peak on the WTA, and she doesn’t even need to tap into it to win Wimbledon. She needs to play at most 85% of her peak to win the grass slam.

Elena Rybakina: I think she’s definitely capable of defending her title—I also think the only people who could stop her are the other two women on this list.

Petra Kvitova: I honestly think she has a shot. She just won Berlin (taking out Garcia) without dropping a set, and she is arguably the best grass courter on the WTA tour right now. I think Kvitova would need an easy draw starting out, but would gain momentum and become unstoppable deeper into the tournament.

Addendum: I don’t think Swiatek will win Wimbledon this year because of these other three women I just listed. They would all beat her on grass fairly easily. Swiatek does not yet possess the serving prowess to play stellar tennis on the surface. I’d love to be wrong.
